    What is a satoshi?

    A satoshi is the smallest denomination of Bitcoin, named after its creator Satoshi Nakamoto. One Bitcoin equals exactly 100,000,000 satoshis. With Bitcoin's price in the tens of thousands of dollars, satoshis make it easy to describe small amounts — a $5 coffee might cost around 5,000 sats at today's prices.

    Why think in satoshis?

    As Bitcoin's price grows, it becomes psychologically easier to think in satoshis rather than fractions of a BTC. "Stacking sats" has become a common phrase in the Bitcoin community, reflecting the practice of accumulating small amounts regularly. The Lightning Network — Bitcoin's payment layer — also denominates fees and payments in satoshis.
